Honeymoon – from Alaska to Patagonia

Honeymoon from Alaska to Patagonia

Virginia, 20, an American student, and Manfred Schubert, 22, a young German pharmacist, met for the first time in front of the Citroën stand at the Frankfurt motorshow in 1961. Exhibited on this stand was a 2 CV which had travelled around the world and which started the two young people dreaming together.

One year later Virginia and Manfred were married and they decided to go on their honeymoon in a 2 CV. It was the beginning of a motoring adventure for two which covered 62,000 miles throughout the whole of the American continent from Alaska to Patagonia. In February, 1963, it was snowing on the docks at New York when Virginia and Manfred took delivery of the coffee coloured 2 CV which they had bought in Hamburg . Then began the first stage of their journey: 23,000 miles in 9 months, New York-Alaska -via New Orleans, Texas, Arizona and British Columbia.

At Los Angeles, on the way back, funds ran out. lt took 13 months of work for Virginia (in a bank) and Manfred (in a pharmacy) to save enough to finance the second stage of their journey: Los Angeles-Patagonia, 21,750 miles.

Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador; Peru, Chili, the Argentine and Brazil… At Rio de Janeiro, they embarked for Hamburg.

lncluding the stay at Los Angeles (16,750 miles), the total mileage was 62,060 miles. For their unusual honeymoon, Virginia and Manfred were awarded the Citroen “Tour du Monde en 2 CV” prize for 1965.

Every year, this prize worth 10,000 francs, is awarded to the team which brings back the most interesting documentation from the countries through which they travelled in a 2 CV. To enter in this competition, send the record of your journey, before 1st November, to the Service Propagande de la Societe Citroen, 133 quai Andre-Citroen, Paris.
